5 Million Homes at Risk of CO Poisoning

June 7, 2017

Five million UK households are at risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, gas leaks, fires and explosions from hiring illegal and unqualified gas engineers, according to Gas Safe Register. Some areas are worse than others—96 per cent of the gas jobs in Leeds were found to be unsafe this year. Here’s how to keep your family safe when employing gas engineers:

  1. Only employ legal Gas Safe registered engineers. Find a registered engineer by calling the Gas Safe Register at 0800 408 5500 or by visiting www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk.
  2. Always ask for your engineer’s Gas Safe ID card. Confirm the Gas Safe triangle, and check the back of the card to see what gas appliances the engineer is qualified to assess.
  3. If you suspect a gas leak or experience CO poisoning symptoms (nausea, headaches or light-headedness), contact the free 24-hour national gas emergency number at 0800 111 999.
